Pedro has spent his life working hard and serving others. Born in Puerto Rico, he graduated high school then joined the U.S. Army. His service took him across the country to Texas, North Carolina, and New Mexico, before settling in Camden. After leaving active duty, Pedro joined the National Guard and maintained steady jobs. He worked for companies like Bancroft and Amazon, then as a driver for Hispanic Family Services in Camden. He also worked at a medical lab, where he excelled in customer service and blood collection, earning Employee of the Quarter two years in a row.
Despite his military and employment success, life brought unforeseen challenges that have impacted his housing security. He was in a car accident, became sick, couldn’t get to work, and had a lapse in income, setting him behind. During the COVID pandemic, he became the primary caregiver for his niece, who was battling cancer. She later passed away, leaving Pedro with a deep sense of loss. Physical health issues followed – arteriosclerosis, neuropathy, vein problems, and a herniated disc. His health issues have made it impossible for him to stand for long periods of time.
Pedro spent a lot of time couch surfing with friends and family, and sometimes sleeping in his car. Throughout these struggles he knew he can always rely on Cathedral Kitchen for meals, for friendship, for kindness, and for practical help. “Cathedral Kitchen has always been here for me whenever I needed help. The food is always good, and the staff are friendly and helpful. They treat you with respect and make you feel like family.”
With the help of CK’s empowerment coach, Hayde, Pedro is beginning to put the pieces back together again. He’s grateful to be able to use CK as his mailing address, which allowed him to secure his birth certificate from Puerto Rico. Once he got his birth certificate, he was able to get his Real ID. And now, he’s applying for housing.
Too many of us are just one car repair, or one health emergency away from a housing crisis. We’re honored to be a place of refuge, help, and community for Pedro and so many others in similar situations.
