Never Give Up

James’s journey to success wasn’t easy, but his perseverance and the support he received made all the difference. His past criminal record limited his career opportunities and he knew he needed a change. That’s when he decided to enroll in our Culinary Arts Training (CAT) program.

Throughout the 15-week course, James worked a full-time security job while also juggling the responsibilities of being a single father. The pressure was intense, and when he failed the ServSafe exam, he felt overwhelmed. To make matters worse, he lost his housing. It seemed like everything was falling apart. “I was thinking, ‘I’m not gonna graduate. I might as well give up.”

But James didn’t give up. He credits the support of his classmates, Chef Nai (Executive Chef and Lead Instructor), and Ja’Net Dingle, MSW (CAT Program Coordinator), for believing in him when he didn’t believe in himself. “They weren’t gonna let me give up. They gave me the motivation to keep going.” Chef Nai and Ja’Net connected him with needed resources, provided continuous encouragement, and helped him study and perfect his culinary skills.

Eventually, James passed the ServSafe and all his practical exams. He was presented with the “Overcoming Obstacles” award by the Voorhees Breakfast Rotary Club at his graduation ceremony, recognizing his remarkable resilience in overcoming personal challenges throughout the program. “I’ve always thought people don’t see me. And then, for me to get that award? Dang, look at me now.”

James has experienced a profound transformation. “It’s a totally different lifestyle and mindset.” Reflecting on his journey, he recognizes the value of second chances. “A lot of people look at someone with a criminal record, and they say ‘nope.’ We may not be perfect, but getting that opportunity for a second or even a third chance at life—that’s a blessing.”

Today, James is the Head Chef at That Breakfast Spot in Clementon, NJ, and has secure housing with his son. He plays semi-professional football and proudly wears the number 33 on his jersey to honor his graduating class, CAT Class 33.

“I don’t have to worry about where the next dollar is coming from or looking behind my back. It’s a whole lot more peaceful.” James is setting an example not only for his children but for others in his community. He continues to give back, determined to inspire others facing similar struggles to keep pushing forward. His success proves that second chances matter—and with the right opportunity, anyone can turn their life around.

“Never give up,” James encourages. “Just keep fighting for what you really love.”
